Mongui Maduro Museum & Library are celebrating another milestone.
We’re thrilled to announce that our digital archive with an impressive selection of postcards (900+) and photos of Sephardic Jewish life is available due to the visionary funding of Mondriaan Fonds. The Mondriaan Funds allowed us to not only scan several materials for conservation, but even more importantly to describe them adding relevant tags so they can be searched more easily. The database of 900+ postcards for example offer historical visuals on various elements of not only Curaçao’s society, but also of the other islands of the former Netherlands Antilles. The visuals from e.g. city views, buildings, historical events, landscapes and scenes of daily life are particularly important for everyone interested in the cultural and social history. They can be considered as historic windows that provide insight into former conditions and daily activities. Especially the postcards with written messages in Papiamentu, amongst other languages, are especially of historical and scientific value for linguist or cultural-historians.
Interested to know how to extract information from this collection, how to use these images in research and how to conduct such research efficiently? Inscribe for our workshop on “Looking different at postcards” given by local historian dr. Margo Groenewoud, on Saturday October 14th from 9am to 1pm. The workshop is designed for people who want to do targeted research in the newly digitized collection, as well as for a general audience who want to develop more skills regarding the use of digital collections. Participation including snack and teaching materials is ANG75 and ANG25,- for youth under 26 years. Registration is mandatory as seats are limited. Register here: (https://forms.gle/dUJyE4a5u3px2h7U7) The workshop will be repeated if there are sufficient registered interests, so make sure you also register if you cannot participate on the 14th.

Mongui Maduro Museum & Library
Is a research center, library, cultural heritage protector and museum in one.
Mongui Maduro Museum
Former plantation house Rooi Catootje is home of the Mongui Maduro Museum, for which everything started when S.E.L. Maduro gifted his wife this plantation house back in 1853.
The exhibition in the museum tells the story of the last four owners of the former plantation Rooi Catootje. Within these walls, you will get to immerse yourself in the past and learn about the influences of this renowned family in the social, cultural, and economic history and development of Curaçao. Not only will you learn about their colorful life, but you will also witness genuine antiques and artifacts from this era of Curaçao.
Mongui Maduro Library
When Mongui was 14 years old, his teacher showed the class the latest issue of the Dutch periodical Neerlandia. Mongui obtained a copy for himself and became fascinated with all the facts he learned about his island and tried to find more information about Curaçao and the other islands. Mongui devoted his Sunday afternoons to his hobby. His collection ranging from publications and photographs of historical significance to everyday topics, offers a glimpse into the life of the past, with items such as invitations, menus, programs, postcards and calendars. It was Mongui Maduro’s desire to make his collection available to the public. His only daughter Shon Ena dedicated her life to the continuation and conservation of his collection and decided to establish the Mongui Maduro Foundation in 1974 in loving memory of her father Mongui. The library holds an extensive and unique collection of “Antilliana” and “Judaica”, with items dating back to the seventeenth century.
