A full week of films in Papiamentu:
KRIOYO FILM FESTIVAL AT CARIBBEAN CINEMAS IN SAMBIL
With the support of the Ministry of Economic Development, led by Minister Mr. Ruisandro Cijntje, and also the Film Commissioner of Curaçao, Mrs. Elouise van Wickeren, the Krioyo Film Festival 2024 project was officially launched yesterday during a press conference. The festival is also fully supported by Caribbean Cinemas and the Sambil shopping mall.

Curaçao will experience, from October 28 to November 3, a full week of films entirely in Papiamentu. This is the first edition of the Krioyo Film Festival (KFF), where, for one full week, the people of Curaçao will have the opportunity to enjoy local productions in Papiamentu from filmmakers in Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire. Even more exciting, we will see our own actors on the big screen.

Many of us grew up with and remember West-End, Roxy, Cinelandia, and even Cine Rio, where we watched American, Mexican, and Chinese films, to name a few. Several films were made by our people back then, but the current generation is unfamiliar with them. In addition, there are new films currently in production.

The Krioyo Film Festival serves as a vibrant platform for filmmakers, storytellers, and creatives who work within the cultural history of Papiamentu. Our goal is to celebrate the unique cultural expressions, narratives, and artistic visions emerging from the ABC islands. By emphasizing films produced in Papiamentu, we honor the linguistic and cultural heritage of our region.

The festival offers a space for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and networking among filmmakers. Whether you are an undiscovered talent or an established producer, the Krioyo Film Festival encourages dialogue, partnerships, and the sharing of knowledge to help others learn as well.

The heart of the festival lies in its film screenings. A variety of films produced in Papiamentu will be selected, covering different genres, themes, and formats. From short films to feature-length narratives, each work contributes to the vibrant colors of our cultural identity.

The festival provides ample networking opportunities. Producers, directors, actors, and members of different film crews can connect, share experiences, and explore potential collaborations.

There will also be school outreach screenings, and discussions with students will foster a deeper understanding of film production and cultural representation. Krioyo Film Festival will reach out to secondary education schools, especially those offering Papiamentu as a subject, so that students can also watch these films at a special daytime price.
