Mongui Maduro Museum & Library

Mongui Maduro Museum & Library
Is a research center, library, cultural heritage protector and museum in one.

Mongui Maduro Museum
Former plantation house Rooi Catootje is home of the Mongui Maduro Museum, for which everything started when S.E.L. Maduro gifted his wife this plantation house back in 1853.
The exhibition in the museum tells the story of the last four owners of the former plantation Rooi Catootje. Within these walls, you will get to immerse yourself in the past and learn about the influences of this renowned family in the social, cultural, and economic history and development of Curaçao. Not only will you learn about their colorful life, but you will also witness genuine antiques and artifacts from this era of Curaçao.

Mongui Maduro Library
When Mongui was 14 years old, his teacher showed the class the latest issue of the Dutch periodical Neerlandia. Mongui obtained a copy for himself and became fascinated with all the facts he learned about his island and tried to find more information about Curaçao and the other islands. Mongui devoted his Sunday afternoons to his hobby. His collection ranging from publications and photographs of historical significance to everyday topics, offers a glimpse into the life of the past, with items such as invitations, menus, programs, postcards and calendars. It was Mongui Maduro’s desire to make his collection available to the public. His only daughter Shon Ena dedicated her life to the continuation and conservation of his collection and decided to establish the Mongui Maduro Foundation in 1974 in loving memory of her father Mongui. The library holds an extensive and unique collection of “Antilliana” and “Judaica”, with items dating back to the seventeenth century.
