On Saturday, February 24, 2024, you are invited from 18.00 to 20.00 to the Opening of our new Exhibition QRUITICAL by Maria Cijntje.

Maria offers a critical view of both the past and the present with her very special and unique Art Quilts

Maria in her own words:

“Travelling and living in different countries, cultures I realized I could be a different person in each place: as if I could re-invent myself. Yet at the same time, I felt the burden and the benefits of my past and my heritage.
As a historian and a teacher by trade and training, I am always interested in how the past influences the present.
Teaching the subject of slavery on various educational levels, I learned that one should not avoid challenging topics.
Now that I am retired, and no longer teaching, I still feel the need to challenge the community I live in.

Not with words but with images.

Slavery, in the past and still today, creates discrimination, racism, and exclusion.
Wars, in the past and today, produce destruction, violence, and … more wars.

I have chosen to work within the area of what is called textile art. We all have clothes we no longer wear, or fit in. There is plenty of discarded material available. The only thing you need is a needle and thread.

Sometimes I plan a piece and make a rough sketch but I hardly ever stick to it. Most of the time I can visualize what I want – though I do not always get what I want.
Therefore, I mostly let the images come to me as they present themselves and let myself be surprised by the result”
