TekenenOnderinvloed (DrawingUnderInfluence) is suddenly back on the island! After the hugely successful IBB-edition in January 2020, this theatrical and performative evening by artist Willum Geerts will once again take place at Instituto Buena Bista on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. This time it’s the special Island-edition where Willum’s experiences and observations on Curaçao blend with us human beings, amidst the contemporary on- and offline world. And you, as the audience, won’t be sitting still this time either.
What is TekenenOnderinvloed?
Don’t just be a passive observer, but actively engage by drawing under the influence of light, sound, performance, projections, and props in the mix with traditional model drawing. Artist Willum Geerts offers a refreshingly different perspective on our time with TOi, celebrates the body and battles the negative image of contemporary Sensory Overload. Why not use that sensory overload to our advantage? Consider yourself hereby creatively challenged!
Whether you can draw or not is irrelevant. Within TOi, we use drawing as a tool to jot down your thoughts and perception, not to strive for a masterpiece. This interactive performance confirms your intuition and ignites your creative impulses. TOi activates a fresh outlook on our contemporary world, breaking through entrenched ideas and biased viewpoints. With the classic nude drawing model as a beacon in the chaos, TOi is an ode to the contemporary human in all their strength and vulnerability amidst the daily information bombardment.
Feel free to bring your own favorite drawing materials. Paper and various drawing supplies are provided, but make yourself comfortable!
See you on March 6 at 7:00 p.m. for DrawingUnderInfluence at Instituto Buena Bista!
Participation costs NAf 10,-. Please RSVP at outreach@ibb.cw
TekenenOnderInvloed is a project by artist Willum Geerts, who was artist in residence at IBB in 2019/2020. Now, he’s back for a short period to collaborate with students and develop new artistic concepts inspired by the island.
Instituto Buena Bista
The Instituto Buena Bista, Curacao Center for Contemporary Art, IBB, started in 2006 as an artists initiative with the goal to create a solid platform for art and art education.
As an art institute that offers preparatory training for young talents, the IBB deals with all the aspects of art and art education that make a follow up to an art academy or creative schooling possible. The educational components don’t limit themselves to the students but also cover a broad area of the Curacao and Caribbean art towards the local society. The social engagement and added value of art for the society is also very present in the IBB structure. Being situated on the premises of the Capriles psychiatric clinic is not only a statement of the social engagement of the IBB but also a reflection of the concepts that IBB strives to achieve as well; collaboration, exchange and development.
The clients of the clinic participate on a regular basis together with the students in workshops and classes. This, as part of an initiative by the clinic and the IBB to make the clinic more accessible to the public and to create more insight in the psychiatric world.Projects in public spaces have become a regular activity by the IBB. In these projects the students work together with patients of the clinic, students from other schools or people from organisations that participate in these activities.
The IBB students get a special role where they have to support and guide the participants and at the same time experience responsibility towards their creations and others.
